Announcing GeoExt 1.1

The GeoExt Development Team is proud to announce the release of GeoExt 1.1.

With GeoExt 1.1, more than 80 issues were addressed, from tickets reported on GitHub and trac.

Some of the highlights include:

Simple i18n framework to facilitate localization of applications
TreeNodeActions plugin for rendering tree nodes with actions
More layer types supported by GeoExt.data.PrintProvider
New data and grid components for visualizing and editing styles
More flexible popup positioning
Easier deployment with OpenLayers cross-library dependency management

GeoExt 1.1-rc1 released

It's been a long time since the last release, but we're finally back with the first release candidate of GeoExt 1.1. And if you haven't heard already, the source code repository has moved to GitHub, which gives the project new momentum.

Many bugs are fixed in the 1.1 release candidate, and some cool new features were added, including

Simple i18n framework to facilitate localization of applications
TreeNodeActions plugin for rendering tree nodes with actions
More layer types supported by GeoExt.data.PrintProvider
New data and grid components for visualizing and editing styles
More flexible popup positioning

For more information, refer to the release notes. To upgrade from a previous release, read the section on API changes.

We invite you to test GeoExt 1.1-rc1. To do so, download the distribution archive. Stylesheet and script tags in your application should point to resources/css/geoext-all.css and script/GeoExt.js. You will also need OpenLayers (version 2.11 or higher recommended) and Ext JS 3 (version 3.4.0 or higher recommended).

Bug reports can be filed in Trac, under the 1.1 RC1 version. Regressions should be filed under the 1.1 milestone. Also, feel free to fork us on GitHub and send pull requests.

Mobile Developments

As indicated on the mailing list, after the efforts done on the OpenLayers side in order to support mobile devices (see here), works are now done in order to allow Sencha Touch to work together with OpenLayers.
You can for example test a "mobile" MapPanel currently stored in a GeoExt sandbox.
We can observe a convergence of Sencha Touch and ExtJS 4, so we can consider these works as the initial steps towards GeoExt 2 and hopefully we will end up by having one GeoExt library supporting mobile and standard browsers. We'll see ;-)

OpenLayers Mobile Code Sprint Summary

Between 21.2 and 25.2 February 2011, 16 OpenLayers and GeoExt developers/power users have participated to the Mobile Code Sprint held in Lausanne/Switzerland. The general goal of the week was to create the basic components allowing the creation of mobile web mapping applications.

Tim Schaub also wrote summaries of day 1 , day 2, day 4 and day 5 and Christopher Schmidt explains some issues he encountered, and, of course, some solutions (blog 1, blog 2, blog 3, blog 4 and blog 5).

I'm personally more than impressed by the results and I'm grateful to all the developers for their awesome engagement !

The Code Sprinters:

Mobile JavaScript Code Sprint, Lausanne, Switzerland, Feb 21 to Feb 25 2011

We are glad to announce a one week code sprint focusing on Mobile JavaScript that will take place in Lausanne - EPFL - Switzerland on Monday-Friday February 21-25, 2011.

The code sprint focus will be the Mobile JavaScript development. The main goal is to work on OpenLayers and extend its capabilities to support mobile devices. The second goal is to evaluate Mobile JavaScript libraries, like Sencha Touch or JQuery Mobile and begin creating bridges to these libraries, similar to the way that GeoExt connects OpenLayers and ExtJS.

The content of the code sprint will be openly discussed on the OpenLayers community mailing lists, and we are sure that the work started in February in Europe will continue at the Montreal code sprint in March.

The following developers have already confirmed their attendance: Christopher Schmidt, Tim Schaub, Eric Lemoine, Andreas Hocevar, Frédéric Junod, Bart van den Eijnden, Bruno Binet and Pierre Giraud. It would be a pleasure to welcome other developers or users willing to support this effort in the Mobile development, so don't hesitate to contact the organizers for further information.

This release closes 64 outstanding tickets, including 30 new features or enhancements and 25 bug fixes. Some of the highlights include:

GeoExt release 0.7

The GeoExt Development Team is proud to announce GeoExt 0.7!

This release includes new data components, plugins, state components,
and widgets. Some of the highlights of this release includes:

* print components for PDF printing with the MapFish print module,
which is also now packaged as a GeoServer extension
* a plugin for creating forms from WFS DescribeFeatureType responses
* a permalink provider to create permalink from stateful components
(MapPanel is now stateful)
* a vector legend component to have legends for vector layers in the LegendPanel
* support of the SCALE GetLegendGraphic parameter in WMSLegend

Atlas of water and health with GeoExt

The Institute for Hygiene and Public Health has created a very nice and informative application with GeoExt for the diffusion of water and health data.

GeoExt Custom Build Tool

We've just added a custom build tool to the GeoExt website. With this, you can quickly create customized builds of the GeoExt library tailored specifically to your application.

The build form lets you specify the components used by your application and automatically adds dependencies required by those components. The tool works with the latest release (v0.6 at this writing), and as we put out new releases, we'll add custom download pages for those.

As an example of its use, I'll demonstrate how to create a build for the popup example.

Navigating to the popup example, I can click the link to view the application source.

I scan that source for GeoExt constructors and components whose configurations include xtype properties that start with "gx_".

I find that the example uses GeoExt.Popup and a component with xtype: "gx_mappanel".

On the build page, I select GeoExt.Popup and GeoExt.MapPanel from the listed components.

At the bottom of the page, I click the download button and get a prompt to save my customized version of GeoExt.js (only 13KB compared to >300KB for the full library uncompressed).

The first GeoExt ux is born: GeoNames Search

After some discussion at Foss4g2009, the GeoExt community decided to allow developers to provide additional functionality and UI components built on top of GeoExt. This can be done through the GeoExt ux.
The first GeoExt ux is a GeoNames search that can easily be integrated in your applications.

The GeoExt community is proud to announce the release of GeoExt 0.6, the second official GeoExt release.

This release closes 51 outstanding tickets, including 34 new features or enhancements and 17 bug fixes.

We invite you to try out GeoExt 0.6 in your applications. Please

The 0.6 release comes with a number of great new features, the full list

A feature selection model for synchronizing selected rows in a grid
and features in a layer.

New data components: WFS capabilities reader & store; feature
attributes reader & store; WMS DescribeLayer reader and store; and a Web

Popups can now hang outside your map viewport!

You should be able to upgrade from GeoExt 0.5 without any issues. To
take advantage of all the new features in this release, you'll need a

Just before the 0.5 release, the GeoExt contributors have created a new website: http://www.geoext.org with a lot of content like documentation, tutorials, example. The current trac will be kept to manage development aspects.

If you have a look at the GeoExt mailing list, you can see that it is very active. And the call for participations has currently 38 names, so I'm very confident for the future of GeoExt. I have to mention that there is some debates around the GPLv3 license, but with the statements of the EXTJs CEO Abraham Elias, I think that the situation is clear.

Let's come back to the features. I'd like to introduce some of them:
- Map widget: this will be probably the first widget.
- Legend widget: you can see here one sample or here.
- Popup widget
- Scale widget
- Tree widget
- Grid widget
- And the styler widget: here or here

One big challenge, as mentionned by Rolando Penate, will be to keep UI/interaction consistency between these components.

I have probably missed some components, so don't hesitate to give me other links.

The GeoServer team has built a very promising SLD styler: http://blog.geoserver.org/2008/12/23/geoext-based-sld-editor/. I'd love to see it in GeoExt.

GeoExt: Where to start ?

OpenLayers and ExtJS are both Javascript libraries, so, for the beginner, it's quite a good idea to learn this language first. I can recommend the w3 school JavaScript tutorial.
Then, you can find some Ext tutorial here and, of course the fantastic Ext samples.
OpenLayers has also very good samples, user recipes and a small tutorial.
For developers, you can the accces the API doc here: ExtJS API and OpenLayers API.

GeoExt: go,go,go !

I think, it is the start of a great adventure ! The idea of combining ExtJS and OpenLayers is not really new, but the new thing is the readiness of a large community to build this library together. MapFish, OpenGeo, Osgis and others have already developped bricks that will be part of this JavaScript library. A temporary PSC is now working. And the interest is quite high: http://www.geoext.org/trac/geoext/wiki/CallParticipation.
